The 23rd Canon Lion City Cup which was organised by The Red Card Pte Ltd was a huge hit in the local football scene. The tournament which was held at the Jalan Besar Stadium brought back fond memories to so many of the ardent and die hard Singapore football fans that a new found belief in the island republic’s favourite sport.
The Cubs as the under-16 and under-15 Singapore national teams are called, have been training hard for a while now and they truly showed what determination and fighting spirit is in the tournament as both sides made the Semi-Finals, a feat many in the football industry had thought to be tall order when the draw for the tournament was made.
The two Cub sides sent, English Premier League teams, Newcastle United and Everton out of the tournament and when onto win 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
The local football fans since the inaugural Youth Olympic Games have been backing the Cubs and now the Under-15 team is also a darling of the many football loving Singaporeans out there. What made the tournament more special must be the fact that all games were televised live on StarHub and EuroSports with MediaCorp covering the tournament via delayed telecast. The young boys felt like Stars, which not many would deny they were!
The Red Card is proud to be part of this project and be able to bring back such fond memories of Singapore teams playing entertaining football from word go to the final whistle. The belief in Singapore football is well and truly back and The Red Card hopes to be able to create more avenues to touch the hearts of Singaporean sports fans.
